Matthew 27:38-44
6. a. Jesus mocked
The four soldiers who crucified Jesus divided His articles of clothing in four ways. Since His tunic was seamless, they cast lots for it rather than tearing it.
This detail fulfills avery specific word of prophecyin Psalm 22:18—one of the most convincing proofs of who Jesus was. (Andrew Wommack Living Commentary)
b. Public scorn
Nakedness added additional humiliation to this form of execution. Jesus was not given special treatment. He bore all the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual pain and suffering of the cross on behalf of our sin.
People passing by blasphemed Jesus for the things he truly was and is—
- Savior
- King
- Someone who trusts in God
- The Son of God.
Even the criminals crucified beside Jesus mocked him. One later repented and trusted in Jesus. The other did not. (Luke 23:39-43)
Satan tempted Jesus through their words.
If you are the Son of God . . .
Save yourself!
Come down from the cross!
You saved others but can’t save yourself!
Ask God to save you!
7. Psalm 22 Jesus’ suffering
Jesus felt abandoned by everyone including God.
Below are the three I chose, but in 2014, we had to comment on every verse. So I included those comments below.
“Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and there is none to help.” (Ps 22:11)
“I can count all my bones—they stare and gloat over me; they divide my parents among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” (Ps 22:17-18)
“Deliver my soul from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dog!” (Ps 22:20) Thankfully, he gave us his spirit before the soldier stabbed him with his spear.
Psalm 22:1 Jesus quoted these words on the cross.
Psalm 22:2-6 The Father turned away from Jesus because a holy God could not look on His Son who was now filled with the sin of the entire world. He was now despised and rejected.
Psalm 22:7-9
- verse 7—Matthew 27:39 says that as He hung on the cross, “they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads”
- verse 8—This was fulfilled in Matthew 27:43 “Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads”
Psalm 22:12-13 “I believe this was fulfilled in the life of Jesus when the Pharisees; elders of the Jews (Matthew 27:1); and Roman rulers, Pilate and Herod (Acts 4:27), came against Jesus.” Andrew Wommack’s Living Commentary. This could also refer to the same as verse 8 above.
Psalm 22:14 When the soldier stabbed Jesus in the side with his spear, water and blood gushed out.
Psalm 22:15 When Jesus was near the point of death, this verse was fulfilled. John 19:28
Psalm 22:16 Jesus’ hands and feet were pierced by spikes. (Execution by crucifixion wasn’t in practice when Psalm 22 was written.)
Psalm 22:17 Jesus was crucified without His clothes, so He and everyone else was able to see all His bones.
Psalm 22:18 The soldiers cast lots for His tunic and divided His other clothing among them.
Psalm 22:19-21 Jesus wasn’t delivered prior to death, but God delivered Him from the tomb. In John 10:18 Jesus said, No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and the authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”
b. Personal thought
Jesus became like us when He took on all our sins and sickness. We have nothing and can do nothing of ourselves that isn’t filthy rags by comparison.
Entering into God’s kingdom requires us to wear a robe of righteousness provided at the time of our new birth.
Those who attend the wedding feast of the Lamb must wear special garments provided by our heavenly host.
Jesus is our bridegroom, so He must be dressed appropriately as well.
Jesus was soon to be resurrected in His heavenly, glorified body. His shining garment would soon be restored.
